Visual media and photography have undergone tremendous changes owing to the digital technology and multi media. We have already forgotten using the cameras with film roles to shoot pictures and are now shooting images with all automatic digital cameras what capture true images with precision.

What used to be considered a precious possessions and valuable is no longer considered so today and has become a common accessory with every one. Everyone including children today carry cameras with them just like mobiles and walkmans.

Today’s digital cameras are equipped with technology that is driven by software applications which does not call for any skill of the user to adjust lenses, check the setting and lights, aperture etc. All one needs to do is to aim and click the red button and things fall into place. Zooming, light adjustment is all automatic and you can even record video images as well as capture still frames in the same camera

Wondering what happens after shooting pictures? . The digital cameras have done away with film roles and save images as files that are downloaded on to the computer for viewing and saved. Today people no longer wish to print photos and keep hard copies with them, instead they save the photos on laptops and Mobiles as well as on CDs and other media storage devices.

All this makes one wonder if the entire magic of shooting with cameras is loosing out to technology. It certainly seems so to the photographers at least.    Every photographer has learnt to romance the camera and see life through the lenses and capture precious fleeting moments and images to make them permanent through the pictures. People found it extremely satisfying to be able to put their techniques and efforts to use and exhibit their mastery by clicking good quality pictures.If the camera, automatically at the click of a button is doing all this, where is the fun and satisfaction?

Photographers are always attached to their art and craft of capturing visual images and beautiful moments through their lens. What a paintbrush and color paints mean to an artist is what Camera is to the photographer? It was not very cheap and affordable for Photographers to buy lenses and had to save up huge amounts to be able to afford the costly accessories which they considered to be lifetime assets. The job did not end with just shooting pictures on the fill roll, but required one to know how to expose and develop the film in the black room and to do the color separation and positives to be able to print them on paper. This was purely a manual job and the quality of the photo print entirely depended upon the precision and quality of the film development and color separation and made photographers proud of their skill.

Actually to recall, the earliest cameras were the big black boxes made with jet-black canvas, mounted on huge stand with the shutter and lenses at one end and the film at the other end. One can remember with great fondness the journey of the camera and photography from the black box to what it is today.

There is no more development of films with digital camera, but only downloading of pictures in files to PC for viewing. The visual images are altered and worked upon by the visual artists who use various software filters, light effects and texturing to create the visual media for further use. They take off from where the photographers have left off. But still it is the keen artistic eye of the photographer that they depend upon to give them the beautiful image to work with. Come what may the photographers will always have to develop their creativity and skills to produce good photographs.
