Xerox Phaser 790 – A First-Rate Printer You Can Keep Industrious
Not too long ago I was asked by a friend to review a piece of obsolete technology; the Phaser 790 printer and Xerox Phaser 790 Printer Cartridge from Xerox. My friend who made the request works with an NPO and was looking for a quick fix to replace their broken printer to allow them to continue until the new fiscal year.
Cost being a primary concern for the agency, the fact that this model of Phaser is only available through refurbishers or off-lease retailers was considered a pro. Anything that can allow more funds to go towards the care of clients, as opposed to infrastructure should be applauded.
The Phaser 790 will not win any races, but for the purposes of a small agency like the one my friend works at it will suffice. The listed speeds from the Xerox website claim that the Phaser is capable of outputting 11 black and white or 6 colour pagers per minute. Colour printing was another important factor as most of the documents are designed to be attention capturing worksheets for the clients. At these speeds it would be possible to print the worksheets for a lesson of 30 clients in 5 minutes.
Another feature in the Phaser 790′s favour was the fact that it has a 400 page capacity, allowing staff to focus their time on working with the individuals they are supporting, rather than refilling the print trays. As anyone who has ever worked for a non-profit knows, the only thing that employees have less of than money is time.
The final point I will mention is that the Xerox Printer comes with a standard 6 GB hard drive, which can be used to save documents that require multiple printings. Again, the major draw that I saw here was the fact that this could save the agency a little bit of time.
The Phaser is not without its negatives however. I feel that the lack of any USB ports is detrimental to productivity as flash memory continues to become cheaper and more present in the workplace. It may not be a commonly accessed feature, but one I feel the staff at this agency would come to miss. The Phaser 790 comes with a standard 10/100 ethernet switch built in as well as a bi-directional serial port.
The other major con faced by the Phaser was the fact that it could only be purchased as used or refurbished. While this created a pro in the area of cost, receiving service would be difficult and costly. If the agency bought off of an inscrutable dealer or got a defective model the costs could quickly overtake the savings.
Ultimately, I chose to recommend the Xerox Phaser 790 Printer. The reason for giving my approval was because I knew the printer was going to be a short-term salve to carry the agency through until a long-term solution could be found, and because a local electronics refurbished had a very discounted price on the printer as well as the Phaser 790 Toner Cartridge.
